IAA 2011: Audi A8 Hybrid, W12 LWB Limited Edition and New 4.0 TFSI Engine

Audi has chosen the 64th Frankfurt Motor Show to present two new versions of its A8 large luxury sedan as well as the brand-new 4.0 TFSI engine which will power the “S”-badged versions of its line-up.The A8 Hybrid will go on sale on 2012 and unusually for such a big car, it features a relatively small-capacity four-cylinder gasoline engine coupled to a hybrid system. In reality, the A8 Hybrid is anything but underpowered: The 2.0-liter TFSI and the electric motor develop a combined output of 245 HP and 480 Nm (345.03 lb-ft) of torque for short periods of time.
Using its two motors that are mounted one behind the other the A8 Hybrid accelerates to 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 7.7 seconds and reaches a top speed of 235 km/h (146 mph).
Unlike other hybrids, the A8 can travel up to speeds of 100 km/h (62 mph) on electric power alone. It can also run for 3 km (1.8 miles) with zero emissions at a constant speed of 60 km/h (37 mph) and its average consumption is less than 6.4 lt/100 km (36.75 mpg) while its CO2 emissions fall below 148 g/km.
The second version of the A8 displayed at the IAA is a limited edition named “Audi exclusive concept”, of which only 50 cars will be produced. Based on the standard W12 LWB version of Audi’s flagship sedan, it features Poltrona Frau leather in the interior, wood olive ash inlays used liberally throughout the cabin and special “Audi exclusive concept” logos.
Finally, Audi presented the new 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine that will power, in slightly different configurations, the S6 sedan and Avant, the S7 Sportback and the S8. Depending on the configuration, its maximum output ranges between 420 and 520 HP and its maximum torque reaches up to 650 Nm (479.4 lb-ft).
The 4.0 TFSI is very light and compact and features direct injection and two twin-scroll turbochargers located on the inside, rather than on the outside as is the usual practice, of the cylinder banks’ 90-degrees V.
It also has a cylinder deactivation system as standard, which in low to medium loads shuts down two cylinders reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions and, when necessary, reactivates them without the driver noticing anything.

2012 Audi RS5
2012 Audi RS5

Audi RS5 is headed to the U.S. market, that much we already know, but in order to prepare him for his trip, Audi decided to give him a little training. 2012 Audi RS5 will be headed by our side of the pond with a few changes of external and updated interior, but the authorities still be with a V8 engine sporting coupe.

New Audi RS5 will continue to use the old 4.2 FSI V8 engine installation, but it's still good for 450 hp at 8,250 rpm and maximum torque of 317.15 Nm available between 4,000 and 6,000 rpm. This engine has a specific power of 108.1 hp per liter of displacement and is paired with a standard electronic seven-speed S, which can be controlled with the selector lever or with paddles on the steering wheel.

IAA 2011: Audi RS 5 Coupé Facelifted

If you just ordered the RS 5 CoupĂ©, you may want to skip this article… A little over a year after its market launch in Europe in late spring of 2010, but luckily for North American consumers, a few months before the sales launch, Audi has presented a mild cosmetic facelift for its performance model that follows in the lines of the rest of the updated A5 and S5 series. The chief exterior changes on the outside are concentrated up front where the RS 5 gains a new single-frame grille with beveled upper corners along with the re-sculptured “wave” headlamps framed by narrow strips of LED daytime running lights, revised bumper and sharper edges on the hood.
The subtly modified tail lamp crystals and the newly designed 19-inch forged aluminum wheels with 265/35-series tires or optional, 20-inch wheels with 275/30-series tires, round out the difference on the outside.
Moving on the interior, there's a new leather multifunction sport steering wheel with a flattened bottom, while the ignition key, the column stalks and the shift lever knob have also been redesigned.
There are no updates under the hood as the RS 5 continues to be motivated by a 4.2-liter naturally-aspirated V8 churning out 450-horses at 8,250 rpm, and a peak torque of 430 Nm (317.15 lb-ft) available between 4,000 and 6,000 rpm.
A seven-speed S-tronic dual-clutch transmission and Audi's quattro all-wheel drive system channel power to all four wheels.
The RS 5 Coupe launches from zero to 100 km/h (62mph) in 4.6 seconds and can reach an electronically governed top speed of 250km/h, or if ordered without the limiter, 280 km/h (155mph or 174mph respectively).

Video: Nissan GT-R Pwns Competition in Mega Drag Race with 11 Sports Cars

The latest Nissan GT-R has put another victory under its belt, this time in a drag race against ten of some of the world's most wanted sports cars at an empty airstrip.
The quarter-mile duel was organized by Motor Trend magazine. The eleven cars assembled were worth more than $1.5 million, and featured a combined 82 cylinders delivering over 5,000 horsepower and 4,000 lb-ft of torque.
The $89,950 and 530HP Nissan GT-R passed through the finish line first with a time of 11.2 seconds and an exit speed of 121.8mph (196km/h). It was followed by the $225,325 and 557HP Ferrari 458 Italia (11.3 seconds and 125.6mph or 202km/h) and the $198,600 and 560HP Audi R8 GT (11.5 seconds and 125.1mph or 201km/h).
The other cars that participated in the race were the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, Lexus LFA, Corvette Z06, Porsche 911 GT3 RS, Ford Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca, Porsche Cayman R, BMW 1-Series M Coupe and the Lotus Evora S (click on the image on your right to see the results).
Nissan, of course, was quick to issue a somewhatpompous press statement on the GT-R's win:
“We applaud Motor Trend’s editors for pulling off the automotive equivalent of the running of the bulls,” said Brian Carolin, senior vice president, Sales and Marketing, Nissan North America.
“Win or lose, it’s great fun and a great video – especially since we won. In all fairness, if we were running for pink slips, we would have had to bring at least two GT-Rs to match the cost of the competitors. We’ll settle for the title of baddest of the bad," he added.

IAA 2011: Audi Urban Concepts [ Videos ]

During a media presentation held ahead of the2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, Audi unveiled its Urban Sportback and Spyder concept cars in the flesh. Up until now, the Ingolstadt-based automaker had only released sketches and computer generated images of its 1+1 seater studies.
Designed for use in urban and metropolitan areas, the tiny twins are powered by an electric drivetrain and feature a seating for two in a tandem layout.
The Urban Sportback is fitted with a canopy that forms part of the body and slides up and to the rear, while the roofless Spyder features a flat window strip wrapping around the cockpit and doors that open upward at an angle.
The concepts measure 3,219 millimeters (126.73 in) long, 1,678 millimeters (66.06 in) wide and just 1,189 millimeters (46.81 in) tall (Sportback).
Audi says that while the design of the Urban concept is new, certain details evoke current or previous models including the open wheels (Auto Union racecars of the 1930s), the red contour (R8) and of course the hexagonal frame grille.
Inside, the approach is minimalistic with Audi claiming "the interior was subjugated to the strict dictates of ultra-lightweight construction".
The driver, who sits in front and to the left of the passenger, can adjust the positions of the aluminum pedals (by 140mm or 5.51-in.) and the steering column (60mm or 2.36-in.) for a custom driving position.
Highlights include the satellite controls for the heater and two large air vents, while the flooring is covered in a textile originally developed for athletic shoes and which is said to be water repellant and durable.
The outer body of the show car is made of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) while the passenger compartment is a mix of CFRP monocoque and an aluminum structure. As a result, the Urban Sportback tips the scales at a low 480 kilograms (1,058.22 lb).
The tiny duo ride on a set of free-standing lightweight 21-inch wheels featuring a blade design from the Audi e-tron models, wrapped around 125/60 tires up front and 145/50 in the rear.
Audi says the Urban concepts use pushrod technology borrowed from motorsports with the struts mounted in the interior of the monocoque in a nearly horizontal position. Four disc brakes provide the stopping power.
Motivation is provided by a pair of electric motors delivering together a continuous output of 20HP (15kW) and 47 Nm (34.67 lb-ft) of torque. The motors are mounted between the rear wheels, which they drive through a single-speed transmission.
A lithium-ion battery, which weighs in at around 90 kg (198.42 lb) and stores 7.1 kWh of usable energy, is mounted transversely behind the seats. The battery recharges completely in about 20 minutes with 400-volt three-phase current, and in approximately one hour with 230 volt household current. Audi says that aside from charging at a power outlet, it is also working on a wireless charging system.
The Urban concept accelerates from 0 to 60 km/h (37 mph) in around six seconds and can reach 100 km/h (62mph) in 16.9 seconds. Top speed is electronically governed at 100 km/h (62.14 mph), while the driving range is 73km or 45 miles.
